The Beijing Folk Customs museum has found its home mainly due to the long history of the Temple and associated Temple Fairs.
Ever since the founding of the Temple during the later years of the Yuan Dynasty (1368 AD - 1644 AD) lavish and colorful Temple Fairs were held at Dongyue Miao. These took place each Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Destival, the mid-Autumn Festival, the ∢Double Ninth∢ Festival and various other occassions. As a result, the Dongyue Miao must be regarded as one of the native homes of the Temple Festivals of Beijing, and thus a treasure trove of Beijing Folk Customs in a rapidly modernizing and changing society.

The wide 3 bay, Zhandai Men gate gives access to the Central Court of today's temple beyond. On the way visitors can leave their prayer wishes at the Gate.

the Zhandai Gate was constructed in the year 1322 A.D. which corresponds to the 2nd year of the Zhihi Reign period of the Yuan Dynasty.
At the time it held the statues of the Taosit Gods of Law Enforcement, namely the deities known as ∢General Dragon∢ and ∢General Tiger . These deities are more Generally known in China as ∢General Heng∢ and ∢General Ha∢. These main deities go accompanied by the usual ∢Ten Imperial Guards∢.
