The Hall of Earthly Peace was the residence of the empress. In the Ming Dynasty it was also a place of worship and the location of the wedding ceremonies of the Emperors and their Empresses.

The Hall of Earthly Peace was the residence of the empress. Accoring to custom, her residence ranked lower in importance to the adjacent Palace of the Emperor - the Palace of Heavenly Peace, thus it had not 9 but only ornamental animals lining its yellow tiled roofs.
